Every Tuesday morning during the school year, students from The Way Christian School’s Fusion High School Leadership Program gather in the conference room at Expedition Church with a clear mission: to pack weekend food bags for the Livingston Food Resource Center (LFRC).
There’s no time wasted when they arrive. The teens quickly set up an efficient assembly line, starting with cereal, followed by soup, milk, macaroni and cheese, and applesauce. Once everything is in place and each student has their role, one voice calls out, “Start!” and the rhythm begins.
As bags make their way down the table, each student adds an item. By the end, the bags are sealed and counted with seamless teamwork. Laughter and conversation fill the room, transforming the repetitive task into something joyful and fluid, almost like a natural, instinctive movement. Every so often, someone calls out, “51 more!” or “15 left!” keeping the energy high and the group in sync.
In just 15 minutes, 167 bags are packed.
Asked what this weekly ritual means to him, Desmond Graham shared, “Every week I get to come here and be a blessing to a bunch of little kids that don’t have food over the weekend. I also get to come here and be a part of something great with people that I enjoy and love.”
“It means a lot for us to come help and serve our community,” added Olivia Lucas.
Just as it means a lot to these students, it means a lot to our organization, as we would not be able to serve this many children without their support. This school year, the students will have packed close to 7,000 backpack buddy bags.
Through their speed, care, and heart, these students are doing more than just packing bags—they’re ensuring that no child in their community goes hungry over the weekend.
