Mountain Valley District Scouts Give Back to Their Community

In 2008, the Boy Scouts began their annual tradition of a food drive for the Livingston Food Resource Center. Rain or shine, you can find Boy Scout Troop 516 and Cub Scout Pack 552 outside our local Albertsons and Town & Country, asking shoppers to donate.

In 2013, they collected 1,132 lbs. In 2023, they gathered 2,834 lbs. This year, in 2025, they achieved their highest collection yet—3,645 lbs. of fresh and canned goods, roughly the weight of a compact SUV. This is the largest service project the Scouts participate in.

Troop leader Chad Yoakam explains, “This is the biggest service project of the year for both the Cub Scout Pack and the Scout Troop in terms of impacting the most people in our community.” This year's donation allowed the LFRC to save over $2,000 in February. Chad emphasizes that organizing and participating in this service project is a privilege and an honor. “One of the main pillars of scouting is service to others, and this is one of the biggest opportunities for us to be of direct service to our community,” he adds. With the LFRC serving over 200 households a week, the Scouts are key players in the fight against hunger in Park County.

“Every year, I am more and more impressed by the hard work and dedication these young gentlemen show in bettering our community,” says Procurement Manager Katie Going. “It isn’t easy to ask strangers for donations, so I admire their willingness to do hard things.”

A big thank you to the Scouts, along with Expedition Church, Print for Less, Park High School, Sleeping Giant Middle School, St. Mary's, Bloom, Apogee Gardens, Fairfield Hotel, First Interstate Bank, and CrossFit Livingston, all of whom recently held food drives for us.
